![]() As Pirenne makes clear, as the merchant class grew in numbers and influence, they revolutionized the social structure of cities and led to the emergence of a rich, prosperous, and culturally vigorous urban culture that in Italy and France, in England and Belgium, and in Germany and the Netherlands, helped to set the stage for the Renaissance. He argues that as trade stagnated, cities in Europe lost their economic reason for existing and withered and that merchants emerged as a separate class, free of many of the political, legal, social, and economic restrictions that kept medieval society so changeless. Pirenne emphasizes the role of trade in both the decline of cities at the end of the Roman Empire and their subsequent re-emergence. ![]() ![]() Their wealth increased, a new kind of economic institution emerged – the guilds – and the populations of medieval cities began to grow. Pirenne had formulated its central thesis as early as 1916 and put it forward from 1922 onwards with a rigor of proof to which the book itself adds little other than a wealth of supporting evidence. Then, beginning in the eleventh century, they began to grow in size and change in function. by Henri Pirenne Henri Pirennes Mahomet et Charlemagne appeared posthumously in 1937. ![]() Western Europe descended into several centuries of what used to be called the Dark Ages. In this selection from Medieval Cities (1925), noted medieval historian Henri Pirenne describes how, between the death of the emperor Justinian in 565 CE and the Renaissance, European cities’ functions changed totally from what they had been during the Roman Empire, and the cities withered in size to tiny shadows of their former selves. ![]() ![]() ![]() You know, you’d think if you worked on something for three years, or it’s been five years I guess, you’d actually have it memorized, but memory is a very strange thing and it’s very particular and goal-oriented and I actually didn’t have the rules memorized and certainly not their numbers, so hopefully I do by now. Its aim is to vindicate the view of the greatest philosophers of the past- thinkers like Aristotle, Plotinus, Augustine, Aquinas, Leibniz, and many others- that the existence of God can be established with certainty by way of purely rational arguments. Gage writes that Five Proofs is an incredibly useful book, that Feser is to be commended for interacting with a wide swath of historical and contemporary literature, and that my main arguments are thorough enough for philosophers while remaining accessible to a general audience a true accomplishment. This work provides as ambitious and complete a defense of traditional natural theology as is currently in print. Finally, it answers at length all of the objections that have been leveled against these proofs. It also offers a thorough treatment of each of the key divine attributes-unity, simplicity, eternity, omnipotence, omniscience, perfect goodness, and so forth-showing that they must be possessed by the God whose existence is demonstrated by the proofs. This book provides a detailed, updated exposition and defense of five of the historically most important (but in recent years largely neglected) philosophical proofs of God's existence: the Aristotelian, the Neo-Platonic, the Augustinian, the Thomistic, and the Rationalist.
